Early this morning after leaving Lancaster County, PA — where a wondrous #Nazarene kids camp is underway — we pointed the #FourWinds RV towards South Jersey.
After a late lunch appointment with a dear Pastor and wife, we took a quiet road towards the Delaware River through a tiny town to see once again the East Point Lighthouse. The little town called Heislerville, N.J., was on our way. We had passed through this old rural shore route a few weeks ago and I had distinctly remembered passing a sign that advertised “Lonesome Dove Carvings”. Today, I was determined to return and to pull onto the old homestead and knock on the door. What a good decision.
After three times knocking on three different doors, a man born in 1937 came my way — Jake Baggley. He escorted me into his old carving shack and O my! What a folk artist he is, indeed. After mesmerizing over his hand-carved, wood and cork decoys, I made a sweet deal on a lovely, wooden one — a uniquely positioned snow goose in its “blue” plumage.
Then, Mr. Jake invited me into his humble home to see more of his favorite carvings and paintings and to meet his sweet wife, Mrs. Barbara. What a blessing.
Before I left, he gave me a devotional book he had written from the Bible and I prayed a blessing over him in the yard. Lord willing, I will be back. He may carve me a lonesome dove.
