My Personal Prayer Based on John 3:17

Lord, please live Your salvation and sanctification through my life so that all others will see Your presence in me. Let condemnation of any person and all people have no part in my heart. Let Your Truth set souls free. Help me to love You passionately so that especially unbelievers will believe but also that believers will not lose heart. In Your Wonderful Name, i pray, Jesus. -kww

Moves Me to Tears / Invigorating

It’s been said my people come in part from fishermen families in Wales. Could be why this song moves me to tears. i don’t know Welsh so the words i do not know but the music invigorates my soul. It is a hymn about "A Pure Heart" - Matthew 5:8. -kww

Here is one line translated in English: "For the sake of my Savior give me a pure heart."

An Advent Afterglow -- Joy and Loneliness

In the afterglow of Advent we realize that it is not only a time of enhanced joy but also a season when loneliness increases. Still, in community, Advent and Christmastime really do make pure joy available to all.

Here’s a lesson i’m learning in the afterglow of Advent. When joy is ruling, i will choose to also remember those moments when i have felt lonely. Why? Loneliness can reappear without warning. Nevertheless, i don’t want to forget the reality of loneliness during joyful times, so that in the days ahead i won’t forget the joy that is my inheritance whenever loneliness is approaching.

i really do believe that remembering Jesus-joy strengthens the soul whenever lonely seasons show up. So, even though loneliness sometimes seems to choose me, i will choose joy at all times.

My Friend, Dave...

A dear friend of mine from the Raleigh, North Carolina, area has been struggling with his health for several years. Despite less than encouraging reports, he made a trip with me a few years ago to the Holy Land. It was life-changing for him. He carried his mom’s old Bible along and reading it where it all happened was transformational. i won’t soon forget him reading the Christmas Story as our discipleship journey group sat outside the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem.

Anyway, my friend, his name is Dave, has given out olive wood prayer crosses ever since the journey — probably 2,000 or more. Many of the hand-clutch crosses have been given to those he encounters on his many hospital and doctors’ office visits.

Finally, this week he sent me this YouTube and once again he has served to put my foot to tapping and my heart to soaring. Hope you enjoy it. Thanks Dave. i love you, man. Here’s a hint of what’s in the video ❄️ 🐎 🛷 🔔 ⛄️ 🎶 ...

Blessed Christmas Day, my friends.

My Friend, Ken’s, Favorite Bible Verse

i preached my childhood friend’s funeral a few years ago. His name was Kenneth Grey Davis. We met at around age 6. Often people believed we were brothers because we shared likenesses, mainly round faces and curly hair.

Before Ken passed with cancer, i was able to lead him to Jesus and baptize him. i encouraged him to choose a favorite Bible verse. He chose Matthew 1:21.

During this Advent 2020 season and especially today, Christmas Eve, i am reminded that Ken’s verse gives all who will believe, HOPE!

"She will give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins." ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭1:21‬ ‭NIV‬‬

i am glad to be among "His people." Are you?

The Bethlehem Star -- December 21, 2020

I know some have seen the post about The Christmas Star appearing this year on December 21st. I couldn't help but really take a deeper look at how amazing that this occurrence would be happening in the year 2020.

In the year when Jesus was born, there was violence, chaos, political and social unrest. It was dark.

The Magi found him by way of the star, which was the "meeting" of 3 stars: Jupiter, Saturn and Mars. They followed the star until it rested on where he was and they began to worship him. In a time when there was darkness, Light was brought in to our world. Jesus stepped into the chaos and brought peace.

Fast forward to this year, 2020. It's a time of violence, chaos, political and social unrest. It is dark. Winter Solstice, December 21st, being a time where the day is the shortest and night is the longest... it's literally the "darkest day" and is the beginning of what most would say the cold, dark winter season.

But on the darkest day this year, Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars meet, giving us the Christmas Star! How fitting...that in the moment of time during the Christmas season that we get to see this beautiful reminder... that even in the darkest of times... Light will, and has, stepped in. In our chaos He is there. In our darkest time, He is there. He brings Light, and makes all things new.

So as you look out on Dec 21st for the Christmas Star, may we be reminded of His power, and His Light that he brings for all mankind. He is perfect at stepping into chaos and bringing it into peace.

Suffering’s Reward

Only by suffering for Jesus’ sake can we claim Heaven’s reward. Suffering for our own agendas is not holy. -kww [Mt. 5:11-12]

Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. [Jesus Words in Matthew‬ ‭5:11-12‬ ‭NKJV‬‬]

How ecstatic you can be when people insult and persecute you and speak all kinds of cruel lies about you because of your love for me! So leap for joy--since your heavenly reward is great. For you are being rejected the same way the prophets were before you. [Jesus’ Words in Matthew‬ ‭5:11-12‬ ‭TPT‬‬]

Psalm 96 -- The Passion Translation

Psalm 96 is inspiring my soul these days. This rendering from The Passion Translation of God’s Holy Word is especially hope-filled:

"Don’t stop! Keep on singing! Make his name famous! Tell everyone every day how wonderful he is. Give them the good news of our great Savior. Take the message of his glory and miracles to every nation. Tell them about all the amazing things he has done.

Let the skies sing for joy! Let the earth join in the chorus. Let oceans thunder and fields echo this ecstatic praise until every swaying tree of every forest joins in, lifting up their songs of joyous praise to him! Go ahead--sing your new song to the Lord! Let everyone in every language sing him a new song.

For the Lord’s greatness is beyond description and he deserves all the praise that comes to him. He is our King-God and it’s right to be in holy awe of him. Other gods are absolutely worthless. For the Lord God is Creator-God, who spread the splendor of the skies! Breathtaking brilliance and awe-inspiring majesty radiate from his shining presence. His stunning beauty overwhelms all who come before him. Surrender to the Lord Yahweh, all you nations and peoples. Surrender to him all your pride and strength. Confess that Jehovah alone deserves all the glory and honor. Bring an offering and come celebrate in his courts. Come worship the Lord God wearing the splendor of holiness. Let everyone wait in wonder as they tremble in awe before him. Tell the nations plainly that Yahweh rules over all! He is doing a great job, and nothing will disrupt him, for he treats everyone fair and square.

For here he comes, the Lord God, and he’s ready to judge the world. He will do what’s right and can be trusted to always do what’s fair."

God in a Cradle

Christmas is overwhelming to the human mind. God the Father purposely sent God the Son by the power of God the Holy Spirit to be born as a baby in a cradle.

Holiness was willing to become helpless because we were so very hopeless. Amazing love how can it be? God in a cradle became a candle of light in our confusion of darkness to lead us back Home.

Ultimately, the Bethlehem Baby would take on our crown of thorns where a kingly crown belonged. And He would wear our sin all the way to crucifixion so our lives could find true reconciliation with Father God.

So, do something this year to celebrate Christmas. If you hang just one decoration, or wrap just one gift, or share just one salutation, do it out of authentic appreciation for the Almighty One, Who would rather become like us in time than live forever without us.

Yes, God in a cradle means Christmas happened and Hope is Alive!

"AKIN TO THE ADVENT SEASON!"

"AKIN TO THE ADVENT SEASON"

A mental health awareness moment:

Today, i am sharing perhaps the most vulnerable words i have ever shared publicly. It won’t be a surprise to those who know my story well, but for some it may be a breath-taker.

My family on my Mom’s side have seemingly always battled depression, discouragement, and even despair for generations now. When my grandfather was born, the family said "his mother lost her mind." She had to be cared for in the upstairs of the old homeplace until she passed 57 years later. My granddaddy’s older sister cared for her all of those days and never married herself. It’s called sacrificing for the family. [My granddaddy’s aunts raised him as their own.]

My grandfather continued to carry the family suffering himself and would have two nervous breakdowns before passing away himself at age 85. [He was such a Jesuslike man.]

My Mom, his daughter, the third generation has been burdened with what she calls "bad nerves" for most of her days and nights as well. No official nervous breakdowns yet. She’s almost 79. She says the Lord’s presence and her love for her family have kept her above it, but she’s the first to say most people don’t "just get over it" in their lifetime. At least two of her sons know it’s true. i am one.

Here’s the good news: "Being nervous and depressed is a battle, but friends, it’s not sin!" It may be what the Apostle Paul called "our thorn in the flesh" but it’s only part of what makes us who we are. i repeat: It’s not sin. Real faith surely helps with it, nevertheless, sometimes God chooses to prove His grace is enough rather than granting full deliverance in the here and now.

i am sure some wonder why i am so crazy about my hound dog. Here’s why. Having a loving dog helps me in my oft heavy-hearted moments or overly dreadful-minded seasons.

Also, i know i post a lot. i have Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and a Blog. Guess what? Posting helps me as well. It may "get on your nerves" but it helps me with mine. i try to always share only good news from my quiet times with Jesus or good views -- that’s photography -- from my prayer-walking with Him, the One called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.

My whole life is very "AKIN TO THE ADVENT SEASON." In other words, i spend every waking moment of my existence leaning into His presence as i hopefully await "THE ULTIMATE UNVEILING" of all He has promised. Maranatha. Amen.

P.S. If you identify with anything i have written, just remember Jesus cares and He, our Deliver will come again. And if you know someone who struggles with depression, nerves, or dread, be in touch with them, especially during these days we are living in now.

i am kerry... kerry i am.

"Because of Our Confidence in Christ..."

"Love is to be sincere and active [the real thing--without guile and hypocrisy]. Hate what is evil [detest all ungodliness, do not tolerate wickedness]; hold on tightly to what is good. Be devoted to one another with [authentic] brotherly affection [as members of one family], give preference to one another in honor; never lagging behind in diligence; aglow in the Spirit, enthusiastically serving the Lord; constantly rejoicing in hope [because of our confidence in Christ], steadfast and patient in distress, devoted to prayer [continually seeking wisdom, guidance, and strength], contributing to the needs of God’s people, pursuing [the practice of] hospitality. Bless those who persecute you [who cause you harm or hardship]; bless and do not curse [them]. Rejoice with those who rejoice [sharing others’ joy], and weep with those who weep [sharing others’ grief]. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty [conceited, self-important, exclusive], but associate with humble people [those with a realistic self-view]. Do not overestimate yourself." ‭‭Romans‬ ‭12:9-16‬ ‭AMP‬‬

"Let the inner movement of your heart always be to love one another, and never play the role of an actor wearing a mask. Despise evil and embrace everything that is good and virtuous. Be devoted to tenderly loving your fellow believers as members of one family. Try to outdo yourselves in respect and honor of one another. Be enthusiastic to serve the Lord, keeping your passion toward him boiling hot! Radiate with the glow of the Holy Spirit and let him fill you with excitement as you serve him. Let this hope burst forth within you, releasing a continual joy. Don’t give up in a time of trouble, but commune with God at all times. Take a constant interest in the needs of God’s beloved people and respond by helping them. And eagerly welcome people as guests into your home. Speak blessing, not cursing, over those who reject and persecute you. Live happily together in a spirit of harmony, and be as mindful of another’s worth as you are your own. Don’t live with a lofty mind-set, thinking you are too important to serve others, but be willing to do menial tasks and identify with those who are humble minded. Don’t be smug or even think for a moment that you know it all." Romans‬ ‭12:9-14, 16‬ ‭TPT‬‬

Born Away, Born Again

During this season of Advent, let’s remember Jesus is the Season and we are the reason.

Yes, the Christ Child was born away in a manger, so that we might be born again in His mercy.

Let’s offer our lives as mangers for Him to be born again in.

My Thanksgiving Eve 2020 Greeting

Thanksgiving Eve, Nov. 25, 2020

Dearest Family and Friends of the Philadelphia District Church of the Nazarene.

The sacred seasons of Thanksgiving and Christmas 2020 are surely going to be different than the ones we’ve [probably unknowingly] taken for granted in past years. Those sacred seasons truly were "simpler" compared to the times we are experiencing now.

Nevertheless, i had this sudden thought today: "Remember, lonely, holy, days are still holy." That sudden thought caused anticipation to arise in my heart. [By "lonely" i mean, Kim and i will celebrate Thanksgiving with only our son and our hound dog as opposed to being with our entire family as usual. Yep, COVID concerns. But i know these are still holy days.]

Meanwhile, later today, i received a phone call from Pastor Jonathan Merki to talk about our January 2021 prayer retreat, yet his opening comment was the most essential thing i heard in our conversation. Pastor Jonathan said passionately, "i awoke this morning with a new sense of hope!" Wow! What a powerful witness to hear spoken aloud during these days of disruption.

So, i want you to know this evening i am praying for each of you, that the two words that lifted my spirit today -- "holy" and "hope" -- will come underneath your highly valued life and lift you towards the skies until you undeniably know you are soaring as on the wings of an eagle.

So, maybe our sacred seasons past were marked by "simplicity" we won’t know this year, however, perhaps this year our sacred seasons will be marked by "soaring" we haven’t known in previous years!

Yes, family and friends, two words -- "Holy" and "Hope" are causing me new optimism. i sense a new embrace of amazing grace.

So be it. Let it happen. Amen.

P.S. You’re loved. i am grateful for you.

Psalm 37 -- Want a Victorious Life?

Earl Lee called Psalm 37 "The Cycle of Victorious Living."

Here it is:

"Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong; for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away. Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun. Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret--it leads only to evil. For those who are evil will be destroyed, but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land. A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found. But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity. The wicked plot against the righteous and gnash their teeth at them; but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he knows their day is coming. The wicked draw the sword and bend the bow to bring down the poor and needy, to slay those whose ways are upright. But their swords will pierce their own hearts, and their bows will be broken. Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked; for the power of the wicked will be broken, but the Lord upholds the righteous. The blameless spend their days under the Lord’s care, and their inheritance will endure forever. In times of disaster they will not wither; in days of famine they will enjoy plenty. But the wicked will perish: Though the Lord’s enemies are like the flowers of the field, they will be consumed, they will go up in smoke. The wicked borrow and do not repay, but the righteous give generously; those the Lord blesses will inherit the land, but those he curses will be destroyed. The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand. I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread. They are always generous and lend freely; their children will be a blessing. Turn from evil and do good; then you will dwell in the land forever. For the Lord loves the just and will not forsake his faithful ones. Wrongdoers will be completely destroyed; the offspring of the wicked will perish. The righteous will inherit the land and dwell in it forever. The mouths of the righteous utter wisdom, and their tongues speak what is just. The law of their God is in their hearts; their feet do not slip. The wicked lie in wait for the righteous, intent on putting them to death; but the Lord will not leave them in the power of the wicked or let them be condemned when brought to trial. Hope in the Lord and keep his way. He will exalt you to inherit the land; when the wicked are destroyed, you will see it. I have seen a wicked and ruthless man flourishing like a luxuriant native tree, but he soon passed away and was no more; though I looked for him, he could not be found. Consider the blameless, observe the upright; a future awaits those who seek peace. But all sinners will be destroyed; there will be no future for the wicked. The salvation of the righteous comes from the Lord; he is their stronghold in time of trouble. The Lord helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him." Psalms‬ ‭37:1-40‬ ‭NIV‬‬

"After Your Brief Suffering..."

"Be well balanced and always alert, because your enemy, the devil, roams around incessantly, like a roaring lion looking for its prey to devour. Take a decisive stand against him and resist his every attack with strong, vigorous faith. For you know that your believing brothers and sisters around the world are experiencing the same kinds of troubles you endure. And then, after your brief suffering, the God of all loving grace, who has called you to share in his eternal glory in Christ, will personally and powerfully restore you and make you stronger than ever. Yes, he will set you firmly in place and build you up. And he has all the power needed to do this--forever! Amen." 1 Peter‬ ‭5:8-11‬ ‭TPT‬‬

God’s Word Speaking

God’s Word has been speaking to me today through this verse in particular:

"Why are you discouraged, my soul? Why are you so restless? Put your hope in God, because I will still praise him. He is my Savior and my God." ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭43:5‬ ‭GW‬‬

“Then I will say to my soul, “Don’t be discouraged; don’t be disturbed, for I fully expect my Savior-God to break through for me. Then I’ll have plenty of reasons to praise him all over again.” Yes, living before his face is my saving grace!” Psalms‬ ‭43:5‬ ‭TPT‬‬

Encouraging Message

There is a dear Pastor and wife on our district who have pastored in the same church for 47 years. They have been having a few personal trials lately but this is the encouraging message he sent me today:

"We are just looking up, moving forward as best we can... God is so good! 6 feet of trials, 7 feet of victory!"

Prejudice Forbidden

“My dear brothers and sisters, fellow believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ—how could we say that we have faith in him and yet we favor one group of people above another? Suppose an influential man comes into your worship meeting wearing gold rings and expensive clothing, and also a homeless man in shabby clothes comes in. If you show special attention to the rich man in expensive clothes and say, “Here’s a seat of honor for you right up front!” but you turn and say to the poor beggar dressed in rags, “You can stand over here,” or “Sit over there on the floor in the back,” then you’ve demonstrated gross prejudice among yourselves and used evil standards of judgment! So listen carefully, my dear brothers and sisters, hasn’t God chosen the poor in the world’s eyes to be those who are rich in faith? And won’t they be the heirs of the kingdom-realm he promised to those who love him? But yet you insult and shun the poor in your efforts to impress the rich! Isn’t it the wealthy who exploit you and drag you into court? Aren’t they the very ones who blaspheme the beautiful name of the One you now belong to? Your calling is to fulfill the royal law of love as given to us in this Scripture: “You must love and value your neighbor as you love and value yourself!” For keeping this law is the noble way to live. But when you show prejudice you commit sin and you violate this royal law of love! For the one who attempts to keep all of the law of Moses but fails in just one point has become guilty of breaking the law in every respect! For the same One who tells us, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” Now if you don’t commit adultery but do commit murder, you are still guilty as a law-breaker. So we must both speak and act in every respect like those who are destined to be tried by the perfect law of liberty, and remember that judgment is merciless for the one who judges others without mercy. So by showing mercy you take dominion over judgment!” ‭‭James (Jacob)‬ ‭2:1-13‬ ‭TPT‬‬

Our Conscience or God’s Judgement?

i haven’t been able to get this verse [penned by the Apostle Paul] off my mind, since i saw one leader place these words on social media "I voted [early] and my conscience is clear."

Here’s the verse: "My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me." 1 Corinthians‬ ‭4:4‬ ‭NIV‬

This verse was even part of the message i preached Sunday on "Being Faithful."

It’s not about our consciences, brothers and sisters, it’s about what God says, finally, about us.

Search our hearts, O God, and help us to seek Your desires in our decisions. Have mercy on us. In the Name of Jesus. Amen.

P.S. This verse caused me to vote today with what might be called "fear and trembling."

Stupid Souls, Deep Water

Only stupid souls hear the word of God and do not obey it. -kww

Having read some of Oswald Chambers writings, he said ignorant souls only need the knowledge of God’s Word, nevertheless, stupid are the souls who hear the Word of God but would prefer to disobey. [He uses King Saul as an example in disobeying God’s Word, all the while, pretending he was obeying. Lord forbid.]

This is enough deep water for me to swim in, today. How about you?

Going Through the Worst, Getting in on the Best

“Remember, our Message is not about ourselves; we’re proclaiming Jesus Christ, the Master. All we are is messengers, errand runners from Jesus for you. It started when God said, “Light up the darkness!” and our lives filled up with light as we saw and understood God in the face of Christ, all bright and beautiful. If you only look at us, you might well miss the brightness. We carry this precious Message around in the unadorned clay pots of our ordinary lives. That’s to prevent anyone from confusing God’s incomparable power with us. As it is, there’s not much chance of that. You know for yourselves that we’re not much to look at. We’ve been surrounded and battered by troubles, but we’re not demoralized; we’re not sure what to do, but we know that God knows what to do; we’ve been spiritually terrorized, but God hasn’t left our side; we’ve been thrown down, but we haven’t broken. What they did to Jesus, they do to us—trial and torture, mockery and murder; what Jesus did among them, he does in us—he lives! Our lives are at constant risk for Jesus’ sake, which makes Jesus’ life all the more evident in us. While we’re going through the worst, you’re getting in on the best!”

"Blood on Our Heads" Versus "Let Down the Nets for a Catch"

"It is a terrible thing to awaken people up to a certain point and never give them the chance to act in the same atmosphere. If I preach a particularly searching discourse and never give the people a chance to act according to their inspired instincts at the time, their blood is on my head before the Lord." - Oswald Chambers

"Preachers are not merely to make speeches for the intellectual entertainment of the listeners. Preachers are to preach messages that engage souls for the purpose of the hearers considering and choosing yes or no for salvation and sanctification versus God-alienation and damnation -- to choose between Heaven or Hell, darkness or light, sin or holiness, etc. In the words of Jesus recorded in Luke 5, we are to be fishers of souls and are expected to "let down the nets for a catch.’" - kww

My Prayer for Those Who Would Be Leaders of The Light

i am currently serving full-time as district servant and temporarily as a local interim pastor. Today, i prayed this prayer over our local church leaders. i pray it now over you and all who would be leaders of the light.

Dearly Beloved Leaders:

Someone is praying for you today, leaders. That someone would be me.

I ask God to gloriously meet all of your needs according to His riches in Christ Jesus.

I ask God to give you His peace that overcomes all of life‘s overwhelming situations.

I ask God to save all of your loved ones, and neighbors, and friends, and coworkers by making your life a powerful witness of His salvation and sanctification.

I ask God to hold you tightly in His everlasting embrace of amazing grace.

I ask God to prove Himself, yes His holy presence, to you, and in you, and through you.

I ask God to give you His holy vision that focuses with anticipation both in the present and on the horizon.

I ask God to grow you spiritually in His holiness in ways you never dreamed of, according to His sacred desires.

I ask God to make you a genuine model of servant leadership -- first for your family and then beyond your family to the church family and even to the entire family of God.

I ask God to flood your days and nights with His compassion, making you rich in forgiveness, tenderness, gentleness, and joy.

I ask God to make the mind of Christ to be formed fully within your thought-life, for the glory of His Name and for the good of others in your circles of influence.

I ask all of these things specifically and fervently, pleading the Blood of Jesus, and praying only in His wonderful name. Amen. Amen. Amen.

Nothing

In John 15:5, Jesus says: “Without Me, apart from Me, you can do nothing.”

It must make The Lord sad when people try to do everything on their own. He alone knows it’s just an exercise in futility. Not only will we fail at everything that matters [without Him,] there’s absolutely nothing we can accomplish of true, lasting value on our own.

So i pray:

Lord, don’t leave me on my own. Keep coming after me, especially if i begin to drift away from the anchor of Your Almighty Presence.

Thank You, Jesus, for Your patience and long-suffering towards me. Help me to draw near to You, knowing You are drawing near to me.

Lord, without You nothing of eternal good happens in my life. My life apart from You will finally prove to only have been wasted breath or in the words of Freddy Fender: “wasted days and wasted nights.”

Be my Life, Jesus. i want to be near and dear to You for forever and today. Let everything You have planned happen in and through my life according to Your good desires. Remain with and within me, my Lord. Amen.

Our Rest, Rescuer and Refuge

Rest really is essential. Unless we take time away from hectic schedules, time will take our breath away.

Jesus promised rest to anyone who would come to Him. He promised to exchange our heavy loads for His light burden.

Let us be arrested by His awesome refreshment. Our Lord knows how to renew our lives if we will only surrender our all to Him.

Jesus wants to be our Source of strength. He never changes. His promise to comfort us with His rest remains.

Do you desire to know the One Who longs to rescue you with real rest and to be Your ever-present refuge?

This song helps me towards reclaiming His holy rest. I hope it always helps you in a similiar way.

1 Thessalonians 1

A childhood friend of mine, Pastor Paul Gillikin,  shared this chapter on his Facebook feed by video, today. The words are so powerful. I pray you will be blessed as you read them for yourself.

"From Paul, Silas, and Timothy. We send our greetings to you, the congregation of believers in Thessalonica, which is in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. May God’s delightful grace and peace rest upon you. We are grateful to God for your lives and we always pray for you. For we remember before our God and Father how you put your faith into practice, how your love motivates you to serve others, and how unrelenting is your hope-filled patience in our Lord Jesus Christ. Dear brothers and sisters, you are dearly loved by God and we know that he has chosen you to be his very own. For our gospel came to you not merely in the form of words but in mighty power infused with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. Surely you remember how we lived our lives transparently before you to encourage you. And you became followers of my example and the Lord’s when you received the word with the joy of the Holy Spirit, even though it resulted in tremendous trials and persecution. Now you have become an example for all the believers to follow throughout the provinces of Greece. The message of the Lord has sounded out from you not only in Greece, but its echo has been heard in every place where people are hearing about your strong faith. We don’t need to brag on you, for everyone tells the story of the kind of welcome you showed us when we first came to you. And everyone knows how wonderfully you turned to God from idols to serve the true and living God. And now you eagerly expect his Son from heaven--Jesus, the deliverer, whom he raised from the dead and who rescues us from the coming wrath." ‭‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭1:1-10‬ ‭TPT‬‬

A Prayer Exchange with a Pastor Brother

Today, I share a text prayer thread recently tenderly exchanged between me and a pastor brother of mine on the Philadelphia District Church of the Nazarene:

Me: In my prayer time this week how might I pray specifically for you, pastor?

Pastor: Good morning Pastor Kerry. As a Christian, faced with a societal condition of fear and uncertainties, I pray that you continue to press on and shine as light with a message of hope! And to efficaciously do so, we must be grounded afresh in an eternal anchor -- the Word of the Living God. For the Word of God is our solid foundation in any crisis! Pray that in the crushing vulnerabilities of our painful world, I anticipate the victory in God's powerful Word! Pray that in the midst of this Covid-19 affliction, which reminds me of my vulnerable mortality, stop worrying about staying alive, but be more concerned about living the life! Pray that I have eyes to see the implication of this for leadership, discipleship and evangelism. And the need and opportunity to live it out in my present circumstance. Pray that I would be rooted afresh in our Lord's mighty Word, and live for what really matters as i serve the purpose of God in our generation. For the supremacy of God in all things.

Me: Dear Pastor, I am agreeing with you even now in this beautiful and specific and vulnerable prayer. I am reminded of Peter who said, "You, Jesus, alone, have the words of Life." He is our Life. He is the Resurrection. I pray you will know Him in His sweetness and in His power and His kindness and in His peace today and day-by-day. Thank you for being a pastor and my heart cries out "Maranatha."

Pastor: Yes, living life with a "Maranatha Mindset."

Me: It’s our deepest HOPE!!!

Pastor: And, the sound of His approach is music to our hearts!

Me: "Hallelujah! Even so, Come Lord Jesus!"

Note: Both of us were raised on islands, me on Harkers Island, N.C. and my pastor brother, on the island country of Haiti.

Psalm 34 Encouragement

My dear Mom, Lady Melba, told me these words from Psalm 34 have been her encouragement this week:

“The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears, And delivers them out of all their troubles. The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the LORD delivers him out of them all.” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭34:17-19‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

i Pray Today from Psalm 119

“Lord, don’t allow me to make a mess of my life, for I cling to your commands and follow them as closely as I can. I will run after you with delight in my heart, for you will make me obedient to your instructions. Give me revelation about the meaning of your ways so I can enjoy the reward of following them fully. Give me an understanding heart so that I can passionately know and obey your truth. Guide me into the paths that please you, for I take delight in all that you say. Cause my heart to bow before your words of wisdom and not to the wealth of this world. Help me turn my eyes away from illusions so that I pursue only that which is true; drench my soul with life as I walk in your paths. Reassure me of your promises, for I am your beloved, your servant who bows before you. Defend me from the criticism I face for keeping your beautiful words. See how I long with cravings for more of your ways? Let your righteousness revive my spirit!” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭119:31-40‬ ‭TPT‬‬

In the Name of Jesus

Let’s pray, today, in the Name of Jesus.

Father God, we come to you in the Name of Jesus. What a Wonderful Name!

In the Name of Jesus we know the Way, have the Truth, and embrace Eternal Life.

In the Name of Jesus we have peace undeniable, joy unspeakable, and love unfathomable.

In the Name of Jesus we claim healing, seek holiness, and anticipate Heaven.

In the Name of Jesus we cherish each breath, desire life to the full, and see death as our doorway to Glory.

In the Name of Jesus we know we are loved, we love you Father, and we love one another.

In the Name of Jesus we have a new beginning, enjoy the present, and desire to be in Your presence for forever and today.

A Sad Song, Sung Beautifully

This is a post uncharacteristic of what i might usually share. Nevertheless, i am on vacation, and hearing this rendition of this song moved me on many levels.

It’s a popular cover of "Bohemian Rhapsody" sung by Angelina Jordan, a thirteen-year-old from Norway. This is a song i first heard as a teenager on the radio by the British Rock Band, Queen.

The reason i am mainly sharing this song is for us to consider the final words: "Nothing really matters to me."

To that i ask: "Does anything really matter to you?"

i want to testify that Jesus really matters to me, and His Presence Matters Most! He is my Life and my Eternal Life! And i really matter to Him, too. So do you.

A Cry for Revival

“I long to drink of you, O God, drinking deeply from the streams of pleasure flowing from your presence. My longings overwhelm me for more of you! My soul thirsts, pants, and longs for the living God. I want to come and see the face of God. Day and night my tears keep falling and my heart keeps crying for your help while my enemies mock me over and over, saying, “Where is this God of yours? Why doesn’t he help you?” So I speak over my heartbroken soul, “Take courage. Remember when you used to be right out front leading the procession of praise when the great crowd of worshipers gathered to go into the presence of the Lord? You shouted with joy as the sound of passionate celebration filled the air and the joyous multitude of lovers honored the festival of the Lord!” So then, my soul, why would you be depressed? Why would you sink into despair? Just keep hoping and waiting on God, your Savior. For no matter what, I will still sing with praise, for living before his face is my saving grace! Here I am depressed and downcast. Yet I will still remember you as I ponder the place where your glory streams down from the mighty mountaintops, lofty and majestic— the mountains of your awesome presence. My deep need calls out to the deep kindness of your love. Your waterfall of weeping sent waves of sorrow over my soul, carrying me away, cascading over me like a thundering cataract. Yet all day long God’s promises of love pour over me. Through the night I sing his songs, for my prayer to God has become my life. I will say to God, “You are my mountain of strength; how could you forget me? Why must I suffer this vile oppression of my enemies— these heartless tormentors who are out to kill me?” Their wounding words pierce my heart over and over while they say, “Where is this God of yours?” So I say to my soul, “Don’t be discouraged. Don’t be disturbed. For I know my God will break through for me.” Then I’ll have plenty of reasons to praise him all over again. Yes, living before his face is my saving grace!” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭42:1-11‬ ‭TPT‬‬

Time Away

2020 has been a hard year to measure time away. With “new” routines and unusual calendar interruptions i am unsure what to say when people ask “are you getting your rest?”

While i do believe i have been able to keep holy spiritual balance in my life, since March i cannot really say our family has truly had time away. So, this week we’ve carved out five days to try and properly exhale.

We have not journeyed far away from our jurisdiction but we are now at a new place for us geographically and at least for a short season we will lean towards some recovery of rhythm and solitude of soul.

One verse we all know and likely say aloud as much as any verse is on my mind on Day 1 of our getaway. It’s Psalm 46:10 and i really want to own this verse this week: “Be still and know that I am God!” Of course, time away does not mean time away from God. That would be the opposite of soul solitude. For me, at least.

Extra: This song that by the Imperials is still on my heart following Sunday’s worship service at Ephrata Grace Point. i asked Pastor Chris Shalter early in the week if it could be the response to my message titled “Unity: Showing Up as Carriers of Christ’s Presence.”
