Believe... Beloved...

Christmas is surely that sacred season of the year when we are called to BELIEVE! Christmas also truly proves that we are God’s beloved.

My prayer is that regardless of the circumstances of your life, maybe even in spite of your circumstances, that you will choose to believe in The Bethlehem Boy Who brings beautiful joy.

Grandpa Fakes Death to Bring Family Home Christmas

This video of a grandfather who faked his own death in order to get his family together for Christmas at his home is so very touching.

Christmas Grave Blankets

Cultures and traditions are different everywhere, that’s for sure. And while I have lived some 57-plus years on the planet, still today, I saw a roadside sign in New Jersey that said: “Grave Blankets!” That was a brand new concept for me.

On my way back to Cape May, I made a u-turn and rolled down my window and said to the kind lady at the roadside stand: “I’m not from these parts. Please tell me; what are grave blankets?” She was kind and explained “grave blankets” in this context are Christmas flower arrangements to decorate the grave of someone you miss at Christmastine. So, I purchased two of her artistic pieces for my Mom and I to take to my Daddy’s grave in a few days when I visit my native Harkers Island, North Carolina.

My heart was warmed as I pulled back onto the highway. So glad my curiosity turned me around, because the new information surely turned to new inspiration in my soul. But, heh, that’s the Christmas Season, right?! Don’t miss Christmas this year!

And this grave blanket surely warmed my own heart.

The Cross Above the Doorway

A few years ago, I preached a message on The Cross of Jesus Christ. One part of the presentation was the sharing of a historical tradition of ancient Jesus-believers who placed symbols of the cross above the doorways of their dwellings. At the end of the service, we gave a cross to be hung above the door in every home of those who attended our local church.

This week Kim, Lucy and I settled into our new cottage home in Cape May, New Jersey. As we were “setting up house”, the first thing I did was to place a nail above the front door — actually the only door — and then hang a cross there.

If you’re curious about the meaning of this ancient tradition, find it below along with a photo of our doorway and our chosen cross nailed above it.

Glance Backward, Focus Forward

As a believer in Jesus Christ, I have believed all my life and I continue to believe and preach that the future is always preferred. Nevertheless, sometimes it is good to look in the rearview mirror. And, I have found that during the holidays is perhaps the best time to look back a little.

Today, Kim and I, left Harrisonburg, Virginia, after a wonderful couple of days celebrating Thanksgiving with my family. We both drove separately — bumper-to-bumper — to New Jersey. It rained the whole trip. Something about rain makes me want to reflect as well.

As I have been looking back a little today, I must say my past is full of light. Oh yes, there were some dark and stormy days along the way, however, God has been so very faithful to me and my family.

We have been through a major transition this year and while there were great losses there have also been significant gains. I was blessed to pastor a church that loved me and my family and respected and followed my leadership influence for 24 years without wavering. Like I told you, there is a lot of light in my past.

Now, God has entrusted us with a new mission field. After six months of serving here, we have been highly favored once again. There seems to be great anticipation among those we are leading alongside. I have no doubt that Kim and I are right where we are supposed to be at this time in God’s story. We are humbled to represent Him in eastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey.

Will my leadership influence be the same here on the district as it was in the local church? Time will tell. (Right now Kim and I are just hoping the pastors and church leaders will show up for the December 16 Christmas Dinner and Brian Arner Concert we have been telling them about for six months. It really is a sample relationship and influence test to see who will be present.)

Anyway, it was late Saturday evening and I had not yet posted my blog and all I could think about was that I have been reflecting during this holiday season already. So, I thought I would just be transparent and tell you where my mind is today.

I did take time today to call one old friend and it was a very tender and touching conversation. We even reflected a little together.

Now, it is time for me to look through the windshield at what’s up ahead and take my focus off of the rearview mirror. I can say there is also light in my future. As I live the surrendered life as more than an event, yes as a chosen daily lifestyle, I know the rest of my days will be the best of my days, however, I am forever glad for the days behind me as well.

A glance backward every now and then, reminds me of the faithfulness of my Lord. So now, I will focus forward once again. Sunday morning, Kim and I will drive to Philadelphia where I will preach in three separate congregations before we arrive back “home” in Cape May. Pray that we will have favor with souls for the glory of Jesus Christ.

Thanksgiving Day 2018 Memories

When I awoke this morning, I sensed a measure of sadness that Thanksgiving Day came and went seemingly so quickly yesterday. I am glad I got to experience another one, however. And at least I can still embrace the memories.

Sweet Lucy loves to rest her head on my shoulder as I drive. I feel loved by God when she does it.

Turkey carving artistry happens with an electric knife.

Now that is satisfaction, feeding my brother as I carve. Note the concentration on my face with the Michael-Jordan-tongue pose. 😆🦃🔪

Just a swinging.

Miss ya Dad, but we are here with Mom, Lady Melba.

The Willis Brothers — Stephen, Billy Joe, and yours truly. We love each other deeply.

Love that curious Grayson-smile.

Allison, Joshua and Riley were with Josh’s fam in NC.

A memory that came up in conversation.

Four Winds Forecast November 19, 2018

This letter went out from me to the Philadelphia District this week:

November 19, 2018

God’s Favor to The Beloved Philadelphia District Church of the Nazarene Family:

It’s been a tender day for me personally. Four years ago today, I buried the earthly cocoon of my dear Dad. The words of The Apostle Paul lift my heart however: “To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord!” (2 Corinthians 5:8)

Today, has been tender for another reason. It was time to winterize the Four Winds RV until the warmer breezes of Spring 2019 arrive. Kim, Lucy Pup, and I have considered it a Jesus-led Journey since May, to travel the district from Williamsport, PA. to Cape May, N.J. to meet many of you fine people that we are blessed to serve alongside. It’s been holy ground.

God is on the move in eastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey. Whenever my Granny used to sense God was on the move, she would quote her own thrilling paraphase of 2 Samuel 5:24 — “I hear a rumbling in the mulberry trees.” My thoughts, exactly! I believe the winds of revival are blowing in on us!

We pray your Thanksgiving will be a holy season — simple and satisfying.
