Brother Lawrence And God's Presence

This morning I have the writings of the Jesus-loving Monk of yesteryear, Brother Lawrence, on my mind. If you are not familiar with Brother Lawrence's writings, you can read them in the classic book entitled "The Practice of The Presence of God."

Yes, I awoke today remembering Brother Lawrence's testimony. His practice was to desire the Lord Himself at all times, whether in the sanctuary in corporate worship with others or all alone at the kitchen sink washing dishes. Brother Lawrence always witnessed the powerful embrace of the Lord's presence wherever he happened to be and in whatever he was doing.

Brother Lawrence's desire is my desire. How I want to love and to know my Lord at all times. Yes, in any situation or circumstance I find myself in, I long to be in His Holy Presence and to know His Holy Presence within me.

As I write these words, I have spent the days of this week waiting on the daily needs of my Dad, as he journeys forward with cancer, and my Mom as she recovers from a broken pelvis. In short, I am what my family refers to as the chief cook and bottle washer.

The point is, I have spent the last 20 years of my life as a pastor of just one congregation. It has been and continues to be a glorious assignment. However, the Presence of The Lord has been as real to me during these hard days working with my parents as He has been when I endeavor to be faithful in the holy work of the local church.

I don't expect anyone to be surprised by this reality, I only state it to reinforce this truth: "The Practice of the Presence of God" is an experience that knows no boundaries.

Let us not compartmentalize "The Presence of God" by referring to only some experiences as "sacred" and labeling other experiences as "non-sacred". All of life is a sacred experience as long as we are found in His Holy Presence and His Holy Presence is found within us.

Devotion calls. So, until next time, join me at basking in The Holy Presence of God, in all things and at all times.

Grateful

In God's presence is fullness of joy; At His right hand are pleasures forever. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. And He said, "My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest." The LORD is near to all who call upon Him, To all who call upon Him in truth.

It looks like you got some "Christian spam" there.

Your post illustrates the thesis of the book.

Thanks Keith and Martin. Yep, I removed the Christian Spam comment posted before Martin's. Peace.
