Pray for The City of Philadelphia

Thursday, I was blessed to spend all day meeting and encouraging our ministers and the precious people in The City of Philadelphia. The need is so great there. In a recent study of the top ten cities of the USA, Philadelphia reported the highest rate of poverty. It hurts. Deeply.

Nevertheless, Jesus knows and cares and He has His people in the city who are sold out to be His Good News to the seemingly hopeless.

Please pray for the souls of Philadelphia. And pray that we, The Nazarenes, will prove to be trustworthy to God’s call to offer Jesus as the Present Hope for those who call The City of Brotherly Love, “Home”.

Here are some images of my day in north Philadelphia and Collingdale to the south...

Shackles — The Song

This morning seemed like a good morning to share this “Shackles” song on my blog. (And, yes, dancing before the Lord may be necessary.)

My Friend, Duane.

A number of years back, I met a man — fifteen years older than me — who would become my close friend. His sister, Vickie, who was attending our church, learned that I collected hand-carved wooden waterfowl decoys, so she gave me a little flying Canada Goose her brother, Duane, had made for her. Soon after that tender event, she introduced me to her awesome brother.

Duane is one of the most compassionate men I’ve ever known. His life-vocation was a police officer, even serving our city for a while as Chief of Police. His expertise may have been in investigation, as he helped to solve an awful crime in our area back in the day.

Anyway, Duane, in retirement, cared for his elderly parents in their home for years. Neglecting his own needs, he made their needs his own. I have never known a son to care for his dad and mom like he did. It inspired my heart, especially during the season my own dad was suffering with cancer.

Speaking of cancer, Duane is having radiation 5 days a week for his own diagnosis. I have never met anyone more positive during such a tender health season as Duane. Everyone who engages him in conversation about it hears these words: “Well, either way my cancer goes, I win.” Yes, he is living out those deep words The Apostle Paul spoke in Philippians: “To live is Christ and to die is gain.” It’s amazing to witness.

This week we shared a meal together. He told me how much he enjoys going to the radiation treatments so he can encourage the other patients. Amazing, heh!

Another thing I have in common with Duane is our fascination with pottery. Years ago he connected me with his friend, Rob, who is a world renown potter in the tradition of the Japanese masters. Rob’s pottery is on display in the Smithsonian Institute, yet, when I visited his studio with Duane, he gave me a few pieces of his highly sought after work. Friendship is something else.

Duane just stopped by my home for a few minutes to check on Kim, Lucy and myself. We were in Virginia for a couple days to regroup before returning to our mission field up north. Today, after his radiation treatment, he stopped by a store and bought Kim a spray container of Mace. Always thinking of others, he said Kim may need this when walking the dog at night. We laughed when I replied that my only hope is she doesn’t spray me with it.

As Duane was leaving our front steps he said the doctor suggested that after his treatment ends perhaps Duane would just keep coming by the radiation suite to volunteer and to be an encouragement to other patients there. Duane said he’d love that. He said Saturdays and Sundays are lower days for him because he only gets to go for his radiation Monday through Friday. His holy outlook on life is unbelievable, yet true.

Pray for my friend, Duane. He is such a servant of others. He reminds me of Jesus.

Humbled to look out the window Tuesday and to see my friend, Duane, stopping by to bless us after his radiation treatment. A double-blessing Tuesday, indeed.

“O Praise Him”

This David Crowder Song from 2003 titled “O Praise Him” cane to my mind last evening. Jesus, You are worthy of all our worship, yes, You are worthy of all our praise!

Deep Thoughts & Selected Images

For my blog post today, I’d like to share some deep thoughts and some selected images.

Here are some deep thoughts that are speaking to me today:

“Stay surrendered to Jesus.” - kww

“The passion of Christianity is that I deliberately sign away my own rights and become a bondslave of Jesus Christ. Any fool can insist on his/her own rights... but Our Lord’s Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5,6,7) teaches us that the only right the saint will insist on is the right to give up his/her rights. That is the New Testament idea of sanctification, and that is why so few get anywhere near the baptism with The Holy Spirit.”
— Oswald Chambers

Here are some images of our past two weeks in the Four Winds RV, as we have been going across Pennsylvania and New Jersey to refresh the hearts of God’s people and to strengthen the churches here.”

Married 38 Years — Beyond Many Years

Time flies, it really does.

Hard to imagine that my wife, Kim and I, have been married 38 years, today, August 23, 2018.

Marriage takes plenty of promise, patience, and perseverance. It is indeed a treasured gift from God, but a gift that must be cared for to be kept alive.

Most of all, a true marriage must be spiritual — holy spiritual matrimony — a partnership between one man, one woman, and one God. In fact, as a man and a woman draw closer to God in individual intimacy, they draw closer together as a compassionate couple.

So, today, we celebrate 38 years. Our commitment to one another, communication with one another and consideration for one another has led us to many years of God-Blessed togetherness. We anticipate with God’s help to make it beyond many years.

Wegman’s Quote

This week we visited a huge grocery store in Pennsylvania, Wegman’s. As a Jesus-believer, I was so moved by this quote spoken by their founder.

Easily Overwhelmed: A Prayer of Confession

My Prayer of Confession, today, and most every day.

Lord Jesus, it is all too obvious to me, just through my own life experience, that we as humans are quite easily overwhelmed.

Without You, we can do nothing. This truth You spoke in John 15, and it’s all so true. Without Your presence, I am absent from real living. You are Life to me.

Discouragement often invades the human mind, sorrows the human heart, and, yes, quite easily overwhelms the human soul. We need You if we are to be overcomers in all that overwhelms us.

So Lord, do not abandon us. We would not last 5 seconds spiritually apart from Your great mercy and amazing grace. Consider our overwhelming weakness and give to us more love, more power, more of You in our lives. Amen.

While Worshipping, Listen...

This past Sunday morning, while worshipping, I was listening intensely for God to speak and He did.

It’s all true. As Kim and I worshipped with the Lansdale, Pennsylvania Immanuel Church of the Nazarene, the Lord’s voice was truly undeniable.

Remember, what Jesus, The Good Shepherd said? He said: “My sheep know my voice.” (John 10:27) I know in my own life, it is so.

There were two areas the Lord was speaking to me Sunday and both were, I believe, His loving attempt to enlarge and enhance my own faith in Him.

#1 is too personal to share, as it was, in part, an answer to a prayer I have been praying for a beloved family member. Nevertheless, the Lord let me know that “HE REALLY IS ALL I NEED AND HE REALLY IS ALL MY BELOVED FAMILY MEMBER NEEDS!”

#2 happened during a portion of the worship service when the local pastor asked people from his congregation to place their hands on my wife, Kim, and me, to bless us as the new district overseer here on the Philadelphoa District. Here’s what I heard the Lord saying: “Kerry, you pray for those around you because I am going to bless them through you as they lay hands on you for a blessing.” It was awesomeness. I know something happened in their lives. Something good.

Then, the Lord brought a New Testament story to my life and applied it personally to my own humble desires to glorify my Jesus. Here’s the story:

Lord, help me to listen for Your voice as I worship You. I do believe that as I am a sold-out sanctuary of Your Presence, that when even my humbled shadow falls on those near me, that You can perform holy miracles in their lives for Your glory. In the Name of the One called Wonderful. Amen.
