Abandon Defined

The title of the most rivoting biography I have ever read is "Abandoned to God." It is the life story of Rev. Oswald Chambers, known most widely as the man behind the great daily devotional classic, "My Utmost for His Highest."

After reading the biography about Oswald Chambers, written by David McCasland, one should ask this simple but profound question: "Am I abandoned to God?"

Abandon? to give up to the control or influence of another person or agent. b: to give up with the intent of never again claiming a right or interest in. c; to give (oneself) over unrestrainedly.

Yesterday, we had a 5.9 registered earthquake in Virginia that was felt across the east coast of the USA. It's the most powerful earthquake in these parts in over 100 years. While it was a time of helpless uncertainty for humanity here, we escaped with no loss of life and little damage. Could such a timely tremor be tied to God's immediate nudgings, so we will turn totally to Him to avoid His ultimate judgings?

Hurricane Irene is also headed towards the east coast of the USA with landfall expected Saturday. We need You, God! We want You, God! We love You, God! Because in Your unfailing Love, You first Loved us. In Jesus' Name, You will not abandon us. Give us hearts abandoned totally to You. Amen.

Do You Still Belong To Yourself?

The biography of the life of Oswald Chambers is titled Abandoned to God. What a declaration to live by!

Oswald Chambers often used words like this in his preaching and teaching to define his own life and to challenge others concerning their lives: I have given up my right to my own life, to God.

Have I, have you, done that yet?

When we Abandon to God, God purifies our hearts by faith. We are then among God's sanctified, God's saints. A saint is simply and profoundly one who can say from a totally surrendered life-stance, I have abandoned totally to God. I am not my own at all. I belong exclusively to my God.

Have you asked Father God for the purifying, indwelling Gift of His Holy Spirit? Have you abandoned to God? Have you given up your right to your own life to God? Do you belong to God or do you still belong to yourself?

Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, Who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself...

My personal edit of a powerful prayer adapted from John and Charles Wesley's Covenant Service:

Lord Jesus, here we are, lost creatures apart from You, and enemies to God, under His wrath and curse. Lord, undertake for us, reconcile us to God, and save our souls. You have promised not to refuse us, for we have nowhere else to go. If we had come in our own righteousness, you would with good reason have sent us away; but since we come at the command of the Father, and because of Your great love, we know You will not reject us. We come, Lord. We believe, Lord. We throw ourselves upon Your grace and mercy. We cast ourselves upon Your blood. Do not refuse us. We have nowhere else to go. We need nowhere else to go. Here in Your presence is where we belong. Here in Your presence is where we will remain. On You we will trust, and rest. On You we lay our hope for pardon, for purity, for life, and for salvation. God's Word on a Grave Marker in Cairo

Through the night there has been chaos in the streets of Cairo, Egypt. Dangerous political demonstrations are underway in Tahrir Square. Still, there's peace in my heart about it all and the reason for my peace may seem like an unusual reason to some. You see, Rev. Oswald Chambers, author or My Utmost for His Highest, died in Cairo, Egypt while serving as a chaplain to the British troops who were stationed there in World War I. Brother Oswald was buried in The Old Cairo Cemetery and his grave was (and still is to this day) simply marked with a white cross-engraved headstone. Luke 11:13 from God's Holy Word is also profoundly inscribed at the foot of that grave marker:

If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in Heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him! (NIV)

You too can rest in unusual peace, Cairo. Only come to the Prince of Peace. Indeed, the Son of God will give you rest for your unrest (Matthew 11:28-30). Also, God the Father will give you The Holy Spirit if you only ask (Luke 11:13). There's an early 1900's grave marker, yes an old white cross-engraved headstone in your old city's burying grounds that declares this message to be true.

Loneliness Leave Us Alone

Lord, let Your undeniable presence be the reason that loneliness leaves us alone. Help us to know that if we will always abandon ourselves to You we will never ever be abandoned. In the Name of Jesus. Amen.
