Mrs. Bethune’s Question

This morning I was blessed to share breakfast with a dear district superintendent colleague from Metro New York, Dr. Sam Vassel.

Sam told a story about his dear mother from Jamaica, Mrs. Bethune. Whenever she met individuals, her next words came in the form of a question. She would ask tenderly, "Are you saved?"

Mrs. Bethune was even known to make appointments with professionals, like medical doctors, not because she was sick but because she wanted to meet them so she could ask them, "Are you saved?"

Sam recalled (what would be) his mother’s final flight from New York City to her home in Jamaica. She was upgraded to first class. Everyone who passed her seat was drawn to the kind countenance of Jesus on her face. Almost everyone asked her as they boarded, "How are you?" To which she replied, "I am blessed. Thank you. And are you saved?"

Mrs. Bethune, also known as Rev. Bethune M. Vassel, cared about souls, yes, the quality of their lives on earth and especially where they would spend eternity.

Do we care that souls need to be saved? Saved from sin? Saved from shame? Saved from darkness? Saved from meaningless living? Saved from lostness from our Loving God for forever in Hell?

Presence Matters Most! No Invisible People!

UNITY!
