Was John describing the way to obtain eternal life, or describing what eternal life was like? Perhaps both.
Some say the Bible says nothing about "having a personal relationship with God". I believe this line in the High Priestly Prayer of Jesus proves otherwise. (I'd say both, Martin. Great observation.)
