Kim, Lucy and I have been in the Northeast part of the States since Wednesday and still have a few days left to spend here.
As district servant (superintendent) of Philadelphia Nazarenes, I am automatically on the Board of Trustees at Eastern Nazarene College. So, this week we’ve been here to support the inauguration of our new college president, Dr. Jack Connell. It’s been great. In the days ahead, we actually meet for our Board of Trustees meetings.
It’s been a nice visit so far. Today, Saturday, we had some free time so we ventured away from the college campus in Quincy, Massachusetts, toward Cape Cod along the coastline. Lighthouses and fishing boats are everywhere. So it’s been an inspiring scenic day for me as an island boy.
As we were riding in the Four Winds RV towards the Chatham, Massachusetts Lighthouse, we kept passing these yellow road-signs that were totally foreign to us. The signs display two words: "Thickly Settled." We were really thrown for a loop so I texted my friend, Brian, who grew up in these parts to ask "what do the two words mean exactly?"
He said the sign, "Thickly Settled" is a familiar road-side warning in these parts reminding drivers, "You may not see us but we’re all over the place so slow down." Another translation might be, "Lots of people live here. Don’t drive over 30 m.p.h."
So glad I asked someone who knew the answer. "Thickly Settled" truly was was like Greek, even comedic, to us. But in reality, we lacked understanding that we surely needed.
Reminds me of God’s Word: "If any of you lacks wisdom (understanding that you surely need), you should ask God, Who gives generously without finding fault, and it will be given to you." (James 1:5)
Don’t know an answer? It’s okay. Ask Jesus. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. (Matthew 14:6) In other words, Jesus is The Answer.
Speaking of signs, I have a little sign in my office that says: "Jesus is The Answer, now what was your question?"
