Those Born Of God Do Not Continue To Sin

(18) We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps him safe, and the evil one cannot harm him. (19) We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. (20) We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know Him who is true. And we are in Him who is true — even in His Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. (21) Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.
-- 1 John 5:18-21 (NIV)

“I don’t condemn you either. Go! From now on don’t sin.”
-- Jesus' words to woman caught in adultery, John 8:11b (GWT)

Cannot sin” means one who is born again does not CONTINUALLY sin, as he once did or is not HABITUALLY a sinner as he was before he came to know Jesus. There is a difference, as light has come to rule over the darkness. The born again believer has no compulsion to do sin over and over as He once had been driven by his fallen nature.

Strong words to wrestle with. Here's 1 John 5:18 from the old KJV: "We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not..."

And here it is in the Contoemporary English Version: "We are sure that God's children do not keep on sinning." Strong statement.

Thankful for 1 John 2:1 -- "My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous."

Hebrews 10:26 is a strong statement, too. "If we go on sinning after we have learned the truth, no sacrifice can take away our sins." (GWT)

Held by the arms of Grace

(1 John 1:9) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (KJV)
